Mobile apps are leaving us this year. That’s my prediction. With the rise of the philosophy/technology of responsive web design, HTML5/CSS3 being supported pretty much across the board on mobile devices, and with the rollout of 4G networks, there’s not a whole lot of point in building apps for specific mobile devices anymore. Why not just build one that works on everything? Those iPhone developers had a good run for a few years, but by the end of this year, they’re all going to have to come back into the web developer fold or lose their jobs. There will of course be some niche apps that take advantage of hardware for specific devices that will stick around, but those will be very few and far between.

(this is all, by the way, exactly what Steve Jobs initially had planned for apps, but everyone whined and complained so much that Apple gave in to third-party apps, remember that?)
