With the rise of the philosophy/technology of responsive web design, HTML5/CSS3 being supported pretty much across the board on mobile devices, and with the rollout of 4G networks, there’s not a whole lot of point in building apps for specific mobile devices anymore. Why not just build one that works on everything? Those iPhone developers had a good run for a few years, but by the end of this year, they’re all going to have to come back into the web developer fold or lose their jobs. There will of course be some niche apps that take advantage of hardware for specific devices that will stick around, but those will be very few and far between.

(this is all, by the way, exactly what Steve Jobs initially had planned for apps, but everyone whined and complained so much that Apple gave in to third-party apps, remember that?)

I especially like the section on the value of user comments on products (even bad comments) since it proved all my instincts and hard-headed past insistences to the contrary were completely wrong (it happens to the best of us). Anyway, download it and read it if you have a free hour, it’s definitely worth it no matter what type of business you’re in. I can see computer programmers benefiting from it as much as musicians or anyone else.

Have you noticed that since the last round of browsers came out earlier this year your JavaScript functions can no longer call ActionScript in your Flash applications? If you’re like most people, you were probably using Adobe’s sample function to grab your Flash document in the DOM. Unfortunately, the latest couple Firefoxs and the latest Internet Explorer both decided to change what type of object they returned in regards to embedded objects, which requires a function that’s a bit more complex. Here’s what I threw together quickly a while ago. There’s probably a more elegant solution if you want to put some time into it, but this code will work if you want to use it:

function getInternetExplorerVersion()
// Returns the version of Windows Internet Explorer or a -1
// (indicating the use of another browser).
{
var rv = -1; // Return value assumes failure.
if (navigator.appName == 'Microsoft Internet Explorer')
{
var ua = navigator.userAgent;
var re = new RegExp("MSIE ([0-9]{1,}[\.0-9]{0,})");
if (re.exec(ua) != null)
rv = parseFloat( RegExp.$1 );
}
return rv;
}
function getFlashMovie(movieName) {
if (navigator.appName.indexOf("Microsoft") != -1) {
var ver = getInternetExplorerVersion();
if (ver > 8 ) {
return window[movieName][0];
} else {
return window[movieName];
}
} else {
if(document[movieName].length != undefined){
return document[movieName][1];
}
return document[movieName];
}
}
